Keeping you & your money safe

At London Mutual Credit Union, we believe in supporting our members to build genuine financial stability and make informed choices about their money.

Understanding gambling’s impact on finances

Gambling problems affect people from all backgrounds, and the rise of online betting apps has made it easier than ever to spend money impulsively. For many families across London, gambling can quickly turn from occasional entertainment into a serious threat to household budgets.

The signs aren’t always obvious – it might be someone checking betting apps constantly, borrowing money more frequently, or becoming secretive about spending. What starts as small bets can escalate when people try to chase losses or cope with financial stress.

The Talk Ban Stop approach

We support the Talk Ban Stop campaign, which brings together specialist organisations to help people regain control over gambling. The approach recognises that different people need different types of support:

Talk

  • Speaking to trained advisers can be the first step towards understanding and addressing gambling problems. GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) operates 24 hours a day, with live chat also available. They provide expert guidance for both gamblers and family members affected by someone else’s gambling.
  • GamCare can arrange peer support groups or NHS referrals depending on what would help most in each situation.

Ban

  • Technology can provide practical barriers when willpower alone isn’t enough. Gamban software blocks access to thousands of gambling websites and apps across up to 15 devices in a household. This comprehensive blocking can be crucial during recovery, removing the temptation when it’s strongest.
  • The software normally costs £4.99 per year, but it’s now free for anyone who contacts GamCare’s support services.

Stop

  • GAMSTOP provides self-exclusion from all licensed online gambling operators in the UK. This prevents access to existing accounts and stops new account creation.
  • It also ends marketing messages from gambling companies – removing those constant reminders and temptations.

The service is completely free and covers the entire regulated UK gambling industry.

How we protect our members

As a community credit union, we see first-hand how gambling problems can devastate household finances. We’ve built protection into our lending approach:

Built-in gambling blocks – Many of our products come with automatic blocks preventing use for betting and online gambling. This removes temptation and helps ensure borrowed money goes towards its intended purpose.

Early intervention – Our team is trained to recognise signs of gambling-related financial stress. When we identify potential problems, we refer members to GamCare and Talk Ban Stop support services rather than simply declining applications.

Ongoing partnership – We work closely with GamCare to ensure our members can access appropriate support. This isn’t just about ticking boxes – it’s about genuinely helping people in our communities.

Why this matters in London

Living in London is expensive, and financial pressures can make gambling seem like a potential solution rather than part of the problem. Easy access to betting shops, online gambling, and even lottery tickets can normalise spending money on chance rather than certainty.

For families already stretched by housing costs, transport, and everyday living expenses, gambling losses can quickly tip budgets from manageable to crisis. We’ve seen how this affects our members across Southwark, Lambeth, Westminster, and Camden.

Getting help locally

Beyond the national resources, there are London-specific services worth knowing about:

  • Local Citizens Advice bureaux provide free debt and financial guidance
  • Many councils offer financial inclusion services
  • Community organisations often provide confidential support

The important thing is recognising that gambling problems are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. Getting help early usually means more options and less financial damage.

Supporting family members

Gambling doesn’t just affect the person placing bets – it impacts whole families. Partners, children, and parents often experience stress, relationship problems, and financial insecurity as a result of someone else’s gambling.

GamCare provides support for affected family members too, recognising that everyone needs help to navigate these difficult situations. This might include counselling, practical advice about finances, or support groups with others in similar situations.

Our commitment to responsible lending

At London Mutual Credit Union, we’re not interested in lending money that makes people’s situations worse. Our approach focuses on sustainable borrowing that actually improves members’ financial positions over time.

This means:

  • Thorough affordability assessments that consider the full picture
  • Protection measures built into our products
  • Ongoing support and signposting to specialist services when needed
  • A genuine commitment to member welfare over profit

We understand that financial difficulties often have complex causes, and gambling problems require specialist support rather than just financial solutions.

Getting started with support

If gambling is affecting your finances or family life, remember that help is available and recovery is possible. Many people successfully regain control over their gambling and rebuild their financial stability.

Contact GamCare on 0808 8020 133 for confidential support, or visit gamcare.org.uk for live chat and resources. For GAMSTOP self-exclusion, visit gamstop.co.uk to set up immediate protection.
