News & updates

Leanne Phillips from London Mutual Credit Union’s Loan Department has been awarded the Tracy Slane Young Person’s Award at the ABCUL Annual Conference, recognising her outstanding contribution to developing innovative payday loan alternatives for credit union members.

The Tracy Slane Award was established in memory of Tracy Slane, who served as ABCUL Conference Officer until her untimely death in September 2004 at the age of 25. The award recognises her achievements and acts as an inspiration to other young people, giving credit unions the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution young people make to the credit union movement and the achievements of those employees and volunteers who have displayed special qualities, enthusiasm and commitment during their work.

Innovation in payday loan alternatives

Leanne Phillips played a pivotal role in developing London Mutual’s ground-breaking CUOK payday loan product, which provides affordable short-term credit as an alternative to high-cost payday lenders.

Her work has been instrumental in creating a product that serves members facing financial pressure while maintaining the co-operative principles that define credit union services.

Mathew Sweetlove, Leanne’s Manager in the Loan Department, said:

“Leanne’s dedication and commitment to the CUOK! payday loan development exceeded all expectations; she is an inspiration to all of us at the LMCU and I would personally like to thank Leanne for her continued hard work and excellence during her time with us.”

Recognition from national credit union body

ABCUL’s selection committee highlighted the exceptional quality of this year’s finalists when announcing Leanne’s win. The organisation commented:

“All the finalists this year were of an extremely high standard. However, the Board felt that your personal commitment and dedication to the credit union movement and the progression of your own credit union should be recognised by awarding you the Tracy Slane: Young Persons Award at the ABCUL Annual Conference.”

The award reflects not only Leanne’s individual achievements but also London Mutual Credit Union’s commitment to innovation in serving members’ financial needs while developing young talent within the co-operative movement.
